P90X Plus Home Fitness Program by Tony Horton (4 DVD’s)

P90X is a weight loss system created by Beach Body, a company that offers other weight reduction programs such as Hip Hop Abs and Turbo Jam. This system claims to get your body from “regular to ripped in just 90 days.” P90X consists of 12 workout routines (a series of DVDs), a 3-phase nutrition plan, unique supplement options, a fitness guide, a progress calendar and online support. Tony Horton is the “personal trainer” for this specific weight loss program. There is a 100% 90-day satisfaction guarantee offered with P90X.

The key to this program’s effectiveness is stated to be “muscle confusion,” which basically means that numerous exercises are incorporated and encouraged to keep different muscle groups doing different things as much as possible. This way there is no “plateau” effect. Therefore the muscles do not get used to the routines and they continue to develop. The workout programs are named after the muscle groups that they work out, and these are: Chest and Back, Shoulders and Arms, Yoga X, Plyometrics, Legs and Back, Kenpo X, Chest, Shoulders and Triceps, Back and Biceps, Core Synergistics, Ab Ripper X, Cardio X and X Stretch. There are success stories posted on the official P90X website. This fitness program is stated to take one hour each day. A few additional supplies needed for P90X are resistance bands or dumbbells and a pull-up bar/place to perform pull-ups.

Exactly what they promise

First off, I do agree with the previous reviewer that there are certain elements missing in this series. The production quality seems to have taken a hit and the overall feel isn't at grand or dynamic as the first group. BUT. . .

These new workouts are more intense and will push you beyond the originals. They are more complicated than the previous series. But the moves in this system are no joke. The abs/core disc is worth the price of admission alone. I got these before I finished going through the classic a second time, so I substituted the new Kenpo for the old one in the "classic" timeline. The new one is much better as it keeps the pacing up where the first one tended to slow down towards the end. The full body is a great addition. The best part I've found is the mixing and matching of the old series and the new. It makes for some great weeks of working out.

So yes, it is more complicated and less visually friendly (although some member of the band Chicago wrote the music for the new series, a fact they are VERY proud to remind you of), but the workouts are 5-star through and through. Just a reminder, these are supplements to the original series and don't replace all the previous workouts. To buy just these would not be to have a complete set of workouts.
It's Shorter, Leaner, and adds Variety to P90X

The BEST part is that these workouts are SHORT!, you warm up,stretch, work out,and cool down in ~40 minutes. However, after completing both this and first P90X, this is more of a P90X LEAN and somewhat more of a "maintenance" work out.

Every day is a Cardio Day. The strength training days (like Upper+ and Total Body+) are WAY MORE CARDIO-intensive than those in P90X, but you're also distributing less time over more muscle groups (instead of POUNDING a specific group for an hour as in P90X) and you ending using a lot LESS WEIGHT compared to P90X. If you just do P90X+ for a while and go back to P90X, you will feel the pain and realize just how less weight-intensive it really is. For this reason I tend to prefer P90X weeks most of the time.

KEMPO CARDIO + IS FAR BETTER and more effective (and shorter!) than the original and forever replaces it. INTERVAL X is A LOT MORE FUN than Plyometrics, it's on par with it, and I much prefer the quick/short transitions between working and recovering, and it's lower impact/easier on the knees.

MY ONLY DISAPPOINTMENTS
P90X's YOGA X is an hour and a half!!!!!!! It's my favorite day of the week, but I would have LOVED to see a shorter, P90X Plus-LIKE Yoga workout with a heck of a lot less TALKY TALKY.

I don't love all of Abs/Core plus, I prefer Ab Ripper in general even though its harder. I like the seated moves(like Cherry Bomb) and the standing/twisting X moves, I'm annoyed by the hanging and push-up/plank based moves. It's ~5 minutes longer than Ab Ripper (which seems to bother me somewhat since it always lands at the end the workout) and it's much less intense, but it does work the obliques and other core areas more so than Ab Ripper. It adds variety.

NOW, I just mix it up, I usually alternate the two P90X weeks with a P90X+ week in-between, I might go back and redo P90X by the book again at some point

OVERALL, these P90X/P90X+ work outs reveal what a total waste of time and money my gym membership days really were.

A good addition to the P90X set

This is a great addition, if you complete P90X and want more. The two major improvements are Interval X, which mixes well with Plyometrics, and Kenpo-Cardio, which is an improvement from the original Kenpo X. You can throw away the old Kenpo -- you won't need it any more.

I also like Abs Core, which also mixes in well with Ab Ripper X.

These workouts are just a little shorter, which works well with my schedule. They are a bit more intense, but I am not sure that you get any better workout at the end of the day because they are a little shorter.

I also agree that the exercises are a bit more complex. While this bothered me at the beginning, I got over it, and got comfortable with the routines. I also agree with the comment that there is a degree less leg work in terms of resistance training. However, keep in mind that you are still working in all the original workouts, so you still get some leg work.

Again, you only need to consider this purchase after you have fully completed a full 90 rotation of P90X. But it is a very good edition, and I would encourage anyone in fairly good shape to do the P90X series.
P90X plus is an excellent supplement to P90X!

P90X plus is an excellent supplement to P90X to aid muscle confusion and develop overall fitness. My experience is that it focuses more on core and overall fitness and less on muscle building, promoting a lean muscularity. There are many high rep exercises that continue for a period of time, which translates into a lot of reps (i.e., far more than the 8-10 reps that optimally build muscle mass). I have achieved good results doing a full 90 day P90X cycle to bulk up, then doing a month of P90X plus to cut and lean out. I think that this combination keeps me from getting too bulky while building total body strength, fitness and "gristle."

Great set of workouts and is consistent with the regular p90x. The workouts are a little bit shorter which i like and the intensity of the workouts have been increased quite a bit too. Overall, another great set of workouts and worth buying if you've already done the regular p90x.
