But it sacrifices some other features along the way.

Place the Maestro 4370 and Maestro 4700 side by side and you’d think they came from two different companies. The 4.3-inch-screened Maestro 4370 is attractive, glossy, but a little bulky. Its mount is also fairly large and complex. In comparison, the Maestro 4700 is slimmer, has a less-slick-looking plastic surround, and sports a matte screen. The unit measures 3.5 by 5.2 by 0.6 inches (HWD); it’s slightly wider than the 4370 due to the larger LCD. The mount is also smaller, but has the same problem as earlier Magellan devices in that you can’t route the cable through it; you have to disconnect and connect the cable each time you take the unit off your dashboard. In addition to the mount and cradle, Magellan throws in a 12-volt power adapter, a USB cable, a protective pouch, an adhesive mounting disk, and a quick reference guide.

I can type in a name or address and the RoadMate 1412 corrects any misspelled words. The time it takes for the unit to lock on to a satellite is within seconds. I personally find the 4.3-inch touchscreen menu and route displays straightforward and easy to read. While I am driving, I can get voice turn-by-turn directions.

The SmartDetour function warns me about traffic jams or slowing traffic and gives me options to change my route if any are available. I purchased the Magellan RoadMate for less than $200 and used a manufacturer’s coupon for $50. The net outlay for the Magellan RoadMate 1412 was less than $150.
