When we pondered out loud last Friday on when we might see the leaked BlackBerry Pearl 9100 (aka Striker) arrive on shelves, little did we know it would be quite so soon. Of course, this isn’t an official release from RIM, and stocks are severely limited: someone has supposedly gotten hold of an unlocked, unused Pearl 9100 and has put it up on eBay

Nokia N900 in-store sales delayed in UK

Looks like Nokia was a victim of its own success. Not only has the N900 taken far longer to reach the market than initially expected, strong pre-order sales have meant the company has been forced to push back its in-store release of the Maemo 5 smartphone until December 4th . The Finnish company told NokNok that demand has basically outstripped supply

The Palm Pixi represents the second webOS device from Palm and what many proclaim as the successor to the companies Centro line of smartphones. It’s geared for young professionals who are shopping for their first smartphone or perhaps looking for a phone that won’t break the bank. Given it’s aging OS, the Centro was surprisingly popular.

To Palm’s credit, the Centro was more capable than a feature phone, came in a variety of fun colors and was priced right. Palm Pre Phone (Sprint)

For me, Palm was the one that got away. I don’t exactly remember what made me buy my Palm V but for the life of pocket organizers, nothing ever supplanted it. After a year and a half long stint with the Palm V I tried moving to a bunch of Pocket PC based organizers. The iPaq was the most recognizable of them all, and it seemed like as functionality went up, usability decreased.

I went through a ridiculous number of PDAs but none ever came close to being as useful for me as my old Palm V. I could play music and movies on the newer ones, but I never used them as religiously as I did the old V. I’m not sure what it was, but Palm got the UI right for keeping my notes and calendar organized. As cumbersome as the handwriting recognition seems to me today, back then I was very fast with it – it just made sense.

To be honest, it wasn’t until the iPhone that I ever truly got over my Palm V. When I heard that Palm was brewing an iPhone competitor, it seemed fitting.

Not all phones are created equal, which is why after months of being on the market and after the recent hoopla about the new Apple iPhone 3G S and the Palm Pre it’s still worthwhile to take a look at the Samsung Memoir T929. As a camera phone, the Memoir is worth its weight as it clocks in with 8.0 megapixels, which means that if you’re a casual snapshot shooter, you have all you need here (especially since the most you really need to take decent pictures is 6 megapixels – although the industry would have you believe two things: 1) you need 12 megapixels on your point-and-shoot camera and 2) a good camera phone has 3 megapixels while an outstanding one has 5). Also, with adjustable ISO settings, the Samsung Memoir captures spectacular images in three resolutions ranging from 3,264 x 2,448 to 320 x 240. Plus there’s video; take that iPhone 3G S with your measly 3 megapixels and video-ability attitude like its something to write home about.

LG Xenon GR500 Phone, Black (AT&T)

The LG Xenon manages to fit a touch screen and large, side-sliding QWERTY keyboard into a small and fairly slim package. It’s budget-priced yet well made and rich with features like HSDPA, stereo Bluetooth, GPS, music and video playback. However, the touch screen response and inconsistent user interface knock this phone down a few notches: the screen requires very hard taps compared to other resistive touch screen phones, there’s no on-screen QWERTY keyboard, the accelerometer works only in some applications and list scrolling isn’t easy. We’ve seen better from LG in the Dare and Versa. Granted these are higher tier phones on Verizon, but we’d like to see more polished software from LG’s touch screen phones on AT&T.

Once you get used to the Xenon’s quirks, it does have some compelling features like a fast and accurate GPS, decent camera by 2MP standards and great call quality. Reception on 3G HSDPA could be better– if you’re in a strong 3G coverage area or an area with no 3G whatsoever, that won’t be a problem. But if you’re in a middling coverage area, the Xenon might not be ideal.
